ONTRACK REMOTE DATA RECOVERY SERVICE NOW SUPPORTS LINUX OPERATING SYSTEMSONTRACK Data International, Inc., (NASDAQ: ONDI), a leading provider of data availability software and service solutions, announced today the availability of Remote Data Recovery services for Linux operating systems. The new service allows computer users to recover software-related data loss quickly and cost-effectively using a standard phone link.
“Expanding our Remote Data Recovery services to include Linux is part of our strategy to offer data recovery solutions for the entire spectrum of computer users - from simple do-it-yourself data recoveries to complex operations in the enterprise environment,” said Mike Rogers, CEO of Ontrack. “Now Linux users can recover their most mission-critical data in a quick and cost-effective method.”
Remote Data Recovery is an exclusive patent-pending service that enables Ontrack engineers to quickly recover a company's data via the modem without the hassle of removing the hard drive from the desktop, laptop or server. Within 60 to 90 minutes of being notified of a data loss, Ontrack engineers can identify the problem and give users an estimated cost to retrieve the missing data. Data is then recovered within a matter of hours, while a typical in-lab data recovery can take two to five days.
According to Rogers, many users turn to backup tapes to retrieve lost data files. Unfortunately, the ability to restore lost data is directly related to the last time the system was backed up and the quality of that process. “The remote data recovery capabilities on Linux operating systems builds on our goal to provide a full spectrum of service levels to the broadest line of operating systems across generations of machine platforms,” he said.
Ontrack currently provides Remote Data Recovery service for DOS, Windows 3.x, 95, 98, NT (workstation and server) and Novell NetWare, and offers Remote Data Recovery over the Internet for Windows 95, 98 and NT environments. Ontrack will be expanding its remote capabilities to other operating systems in 2000. Remote Data Recovery services are available from Ontrack labs around the world.
To obtain Remote Data Recovery service, users can contact Ontrack 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 1-800-872-2599. Once a call is made, Ontrack representatives work with users to determine if it is a remote or in-lab data recovery situation. Users must also have a modem, no obvious hardware problems with their computer and access to the Internet via an alternative computer to download the Remote Data Recovery communications software.
Diagnostic fees for standard Remote Data Recovery services are $100 for desktop operating systems. Actual data recovery costs will vary depending on the individual data loss situation, including those caused by deleted files, viruses, corrupted file structures and software malfunctions.
