GLOBAL SURVEY SHOWS THAT USER ATTEMPTS TO CORRECT COMPUTER MALFUNCTIONS ARE A LEADING CAUSE OF PERMANENT DATA LOSS
Ontrack Data Recovery Finds 75% of Computer Users Worldwide Call IT Too Late
MINNEAPOLIS – March 29, 2005 – According to a recent global data loss research study* from Ontrack Data Recovery, the world’s leading data recovery company, 75 percent of computer users’ immediate reaction to data loss is to try and recover the lost document themselves by using recovery software or either restarting or unplugging their computer. Unfortunately, since failed attempts can have detrimental and permanent effects, the victim’s first reaction is crucial to the outcome of recovery work and a user-attempted quick fix is the surest way to render your data permanently irretrievable.
Ontrack questioned computer users worldwide and found that only 13 percent of those surveyed think to contact their IT department first before attempting to recover missing data themselves. Meanwhile, 33 percent of interviewees surveyed in the UK will shout at the computer as their first line of defense, while 38 percent of their US counterparts resign themselves to merely sighing at the first sign of computer malfunction.
“While these results conjure up some interesting images of users screaming at their crashed computers, the fact that the IT department is not the first point of contact for almost 90% of people is extremely worrying,” said Todd Johnson, vice president of Data Recovery Operations for Ontrack Data Recovery. “Data loss needs to be treated as an emergency situation, and untrained guesswork will only cause more damage to lost files, or even render them irretrievable. If your pipes burst, you call an emergency plumber, and this is no different to your computer malfunctioning.”
Overall research showed that trying to solve the problem alone without alerting the IT department is a global trait, and is one of the most common reasons lost or corrupted data becomes irretrievable.
Adds Johnson, “Recovery software will be able to help you retrieve some files in many data loss cases, however, the first course of action should always be a consultation from IT experts or a recovery specialist.”
